Continuing in our Wordpress step by step series, we now arrive in an area of discussion which is most important as training needs are concerned - producing effective content. We briefly mentioned, in the previous post, search engine optimization.
We once examined two different tutorials series teaching Wordpress – the first spent approximately 35 minutes training on content management strategies while the other took an astronomical amount of time doing the same - three hours. Why such a vast difference? The answer harkens back to something put forth in the first of this post series - incomplete training. WordPress content instruction must go further than just teaching how to launch a post and/or page and not forsake the knowledge that next to having a website, this is more important than any other area!
What a strong and stereo typical statement. Let us now quantify what is sure to outrage a few. WordPress blog posts are simply ancillary advertisement demonstrating subject matter expertise. It constantly amazes us that webmasters spend so much money on advertising, using one platform or another, and forsake the best and furthest reaching form of publicity - optimize content.
The second video tutorial series got this point across in amazing fashion while the first left us with more questions than answers. Are we saying that length equals quality? Absolutely not! Most WordPress topics, excluding search engine optimization and content, can be effectively covered in a brief amount of time.
Content, properly optimized anyway, will be indexed on major search engines and will remain so for a lengthy amount of time depending on competitiveness of keyword market. The expense is also minimal when compared to paid advertising because outside of the time it takes to create, there is no ongoing cost.
Contrast that with paid advertising. Every visit costs money. Where are we going with this? If your time is limited, it is our professional advice that you spend most of it creating optimized content. Should the Wordpress tutorial series not teach this it is a sure bet there are other, critical omissions on the part of the instructor. Plugins, second to only themes, are very popular as website services go. It would take many post to thoroughly cover exactly what function they perform, nevertheless they can be likened unto a lamp.
You’ve found a lamp you really like, buy it, take it home and set it on the table. It is great to look at however - you wonder why the light isn’t on and reckon ask – “what good is a lamp if the light doesn’t work?” Suddenly, you realize it hasn’t yet been plugged in and having not done so, the lamp will fail to effectively perform its function.
WordPress websites are like that lamp and the electric cord to that lamp, is like WordPress plugins. The website won't perform its function without the electricity that plugins provide. As we close, it is critical to understand any tutorial series that doesn't cover every area of WordPress is going to affect the outcome of your business venture.
