Asking and answering the question; what is Seo, will have profound impact on the future of any Internet based marketing effort. Whether web based or traditional ‘brick-n-mortar’, establishing an industry specific Seo plan is critical to positioning services in competitive, organic search markets.

The simplest definition of Seo is; an online marketing process of targeting industry specific search. When phrases are typed into search engines, a list of organically ranked websites, according to keyword query, are served. Each listing on Google, Yahoo and Bing, totaling 10 websites per page, are ranked according to ‘subject (keyword) authority’. This authority is established by many factors but the centerpiece is keyword selection, deployment, and anchor text throughout website hierarchy.

When building a Seo plan, there is another important factor which weighs heavily on organic rankings – social media engagement! More than ever, Google Circle’s, Facebook shares, Re-tweets, video embeds and other social activity influences organic placement.

Social activity not only speaks to popularity (or authority) of content but quickly builds relevant backlinks through ‘sharing’. There is one rule which should be considered when making a run to top indexing results – if you focus on effective keyword deployment and user engagement, the rest, as a wise old sage once said – “will take care of itself”.

If ever there was a digital ‘promised land’, it would be a top ranked website on the first page of Google! The importance of achieving such a lofty milestone could hardly be understated. Many online businesses use, as a primary market penetration strategy, paid search advertising. While this is certainly a valid approach, paid advertising pales in comparison to organically ranked websites! For every click received by paid advertisers, organically ranked websites receive eight times as many. Here are variables used by indexing bots, responsible for locating and placing relevant content in search;

1. Keyword selection and use
2. Keyword rich domain
3. Optimized meta data
4. Hierarchy titles
5. Anchor text usage
6. Overall content theme relevance
7. Backlinks
8. Website load time
9. Backlinks
10. Social media engagement

These measures provide bots an overall picture of authority. Serving page #1 results for any business is indeed a ‘game changer’ but effective planning as well as strategy execution is just the beginning. As important is website preparation for visitor arrival. Test every area of website navigation, sales funnels and usability or the game will indeed be changed; just not in a way which benefits your business goals. Implementing basic Seo strategies is critical for both short and long term, online marketing success. Although paid search, contextual links, Affiliate marketing and other forms of advertising are worthwhile promotion alternatives, high organic search rankings on Google, Yahoo and Bing positions brand messaging to receive more cost effective, longer term website traffic.

Where does effective planning begin? Necessary to achieving significant rankings (aka page #1 rankings) and thus geo-targeted traffic, is mining industry specific Seo keywords. Often-times, new new website owners take the approach of that famous line in the hit movie Field of Dreams – “build it and they will come”. Unless you are Wal-Mart, nothing could be further from true!
