ABC of Internet Marketing

Here’s a basic introduction to the terms and acronym used in the world of internet marketing. It is not as difficult as it seems and once you have the hang of it, it would be easier for you to understand. The list below is not exhaustive and pardon me if I miss out any terms. All these terms are used in my daily work. They are also described as best to my knowledge.
Adsense – Adsense is a popular Google Service that allows users to earn. It works in a way that when a visitor clicks a Adsense advertisement on your website, you earn.
Adwords – Google advertising platform that allows user to advertise their website.
Affiliate Marketing – One of the best business model in the internet marketing industry. You promote other person’s products and if you close a sale, you earn commission. The marketer is thus know as affiliate.
Article Spinning – It basically means to churn out more articles using the original articles by rephrasing or rewording the content. There is software to spin articles.
Authority Site – A website that is great influence over the niche and is popular among customers.
Backlink – When one website links to your website.
Blog – An online journal. Just like my blog
Bounce Rate – The percentage of people that are not receiving your emails due to full mailbox or some other reasons.
Call To Action (CTA) – Words that encourage users to do a specify task. Example: Click Here for download your Free Money Making Video
Captcha – A program detecting spam or bot by asking visitors to type in the characters they see in an image or solve a simple math problem.
Click Through Rate (CTR) – A very important term! The percentage of visitors who visited the website and clicked on the link.
Cloak – Showing different content to search engines and humans.
Conversion Rate – The percentage of visitor that came through the website and decides to make a purchase.
Copywriting – To write effectively to entice visitors to purchase or do a specify action.
Cost Per Acquisition – An online advertising cost structure where you pay per an agreed upon actionable event, such as a lead, registration, or sale.
Cost Per Click (CPC) – How much advertising fee paid for each visitor who click on the desired link.
Cost Per Impression (CPM) – How much advertising fee paid for a certain number times that your advertising appeared.
DoFollow – A backlink that can be followed by search engine spiders/crawlers/bots.
Domain Name – The website name.
Downsell – Selling a lower cost product or service after the prospect did not buy the initial product or service.
Ebook – A digital version of a book usually in PDF format.
Ecommerce – Electronic commerce is the buying or selling of products/services on the internet.
Email List – A list of visitors’ email addresses after that either subscribe to your content or purchase your product.
Email Marketing – Direct marketing via the use of email!
Exit Pop – A pop up when the user tries to leave the website.
Forum – A online community in which a particular interest is discussed.
Guest Post – To provide a blog post on other people blog or website.
Internet Marketing (IM) – Yes, now you understand why is my website know as imjackson? It refers to both Internet Marketing Jackson and at the same time I’m Jackson
Keyword – A highly search term or word in the search engine.
Landing Page – The page where visitors first see your website. It usually have a call to action or opt-in form.
Link – A link from one website to another.
Meta Description – The description of a webpage that appears in search engine results pages.
Monetize – Do things so that the website can earn money!
Niche – A specific market or customer segmentation.
Online Marketing – Similar to internet marketing. Marketing online.
Opt In – Visitor sign up for your content such newsletter or a freebie.
Pay Per Action / Lead (PPA / PPL) – Both a advertising model as well as form of business for earning. Users are paid or paid only when a certain action by the visitor is done. For example, signing up for a free trial.
Pay Per Click (PPC) – An advertising model in which the users pay a amount for each click generated.
Plugin – To me it is a software that works with WordPress in providing some additional functionality.
Popup – Another “window” appearing after the initial website loads.
Private Label Rights (PLR) – A license to reuse, rename, remodel the digital products.
Really Simple Syndication (RSS) – A standard data feed system used to deliver updates/content from websites. Example, here my blog RSS feed: I M Jackson
Redirect – Direct the visitor to another website.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) – Optimizing your website to achieve higher rankings in the search engine results.
Search Engine Results Page (SERP) – As the name suggests, the results pages after you search on Yahoo, Google, Bing, etc
Social Media – Facebook, Instagram, Twitter!
Split Testing – Testing of different website to determine which yield the best results.
Subscriber – A visitor who opt in to your newsletter or subscribe to your RSS feed.
Traffic – The visitors who visit your website.
Uniform Resource Locator (URL) – The address of a webpage on the internet.
Upsell – Selling the customers another complimentary product or service at a higher price after he already decide to purchase the original offer.
WordPress – A content management system. Same as my blog.
