Do you know how to integrate paypal for mobile friendly?
It must surely already exist a script for this ... no!

Also a great way to market this would be at your local Chamber of Commerce monthly mixer. There are a lot of business contacts there and the Chamber in your city probably needs a mobile site. Do a mock up for the chamber and then chat up the CEO at the mixer about it and show the example. The word might quickly spread about what you do. Also while networking learn about the other businesses there and talk to them about what you do (without selling to hard). You canshow them your chamber mock up as an example. That could be a gold mine for potential business in some areas, they might even let you do a presentation.
You're right about chambers! Just visited a few in my area myself and see lots of potential!!!
Also, for women, don't forget to check out any local Women's Business Networks in your area - I've found at least 2 that I'm looking forward to attending.

Grow up, seriously.

This forum relies and thrives on it's many users to make sure people are following the rules. What sort of forum would it be otherwise? What sort of a forum would it be if it was full of useless posts just trying to push affiliate links?

And if you have a problem with me sharing my knowledge and opinions in a FORUM then don't read them. I have no desire to help someone with your attitude anyway.

But Willy!!! Why would we need "many users" when we have you???
Geez, you "have no desire to help" me??? What will I do???!!!
Attitude huh, well you certainly could be 1st in line for an attitude transplant if they ever do it.
I guess this means it's over between us huh?

the value is simply in calling out ego maniacs like you - which you display over and over again not only on this thread but so many others as well.

His ignorance is his bliss I guess. He has no clue how self-centered he is, which is irritating at first and then amusing after a while.

Some people like that are just "saying whats on their mind" but they have no idea thats a really bad idea unless what you have on your mind is good stuff.

But my philosophy is: Take what I need and leave the rest.

I sense that if this type of conversations continue, this thread will be closed soon and we will not be able to learn and share our knowledge about the mobile web business further on this one of the most valuable threads of the forum. Please keep your personal feelings to PMs and let the mobile discussion go on.

I only had basic HTML skills when I started and have been able to figure out how to make the mobile websites pretty easy. Especially the mock ups. Quentins videos are fantastic for learning the skills, as well as bit of perseverance and Google searches to figure out things I wasn't sure of.
One thing I did to make things easier was I found a local gal through Craigslist with 10 years of website experience. Now if I have a small problem I can't figure out, I email or call her on the phone and she solves my problem, usually in 10 minutes! I have her track her time and bill me monthly, it ends up being between $50-100 per month and really helps me out!

Your the perfect student MK because like me you take the foundations and build on them and always make what you learn better and more applicable.

As for Wills posts Martha you should read his posts with an open mind because there are some real gems in there.

I agree with Nail that we should not make this stuff public.

On another note having a real fun time trying to get mobile video, not youtube, etc working with html5. So made my video in H.265, mv4, org.ogv and so many more but just not working on the phone.

Seems like the standards mentioned on WC3 do not work that well. I have found some great reading though and will post it when I get home.

@quentin using video for mobile handsets is no easy task

if you are wanting to embed the video within the layout you will need to detect the device that is viewing the page - based on the device you will need to either

1) Use HTML5 to embed your video - ie if device is iphone, itouch, etc
2) Use Flash to embed your video - ie if device is android

Other devices i am not sure about - so I link direct to the video from a mock video player image.

If you dont want to embed the video in the layout but would rather open it in the devices video player you will need to consider if you want the video to play as it is downloading or not. Whilst MPEG4 is supported on Iphones, and Androids i know for a fact Android 2.1 does not support progressive download and playback ie you have to wait for the video to download before you can watch it... this can severely interrupt the end user experience.

A universal approach is to use 3GP however using this format your video and audio quality will be greatly depreciated compared to the output of a MPEG4 file - despite the cons the pros are worth looking at:

1) you can tweak your settings to get reasonable output using 3gp
2) most devices will play 3gp as it downloads
3) files is smaller than using MPEG4
4) both android and iphone users can have video playback whilst its buffering in the devices video player

In the end youtube is probably the easiest option.

So here is a sample however you have to use your smart phone for it to work.

Interested to see if it all works for you.

Did you try Easy Video Player?? With that you control all of your videos and also your videos can be mobile optimized for any phone. I made mention of this to you in the thread that you started about mobile video.

I did have a look eyesocialize, but no trial to see how it works and I have bought so many recently and they were all crap.

Do you have a mobile site using the software so I can see it in action.

I plan on getting it this weekend because I feel like it's a good investment. I like that fact that you don't have to rely on you tube or whoever to keep your's or your clients video's on there site. Alot of people's videos get ghosted sometimes on you tube. Anyway when I purchase it tomorrow I will give it a twirl and let you know. There has been nothing but good reviews about EVP. Most of the top IM people have been using EVP for there launches.

@quentin - looks like your not using youtube now... how big is the video file?

i dont have an android 2.1 anymore i upgraded to 2.2 not to long ago so its tough to see if the buffering video is still an issue or not - although there is a long pause at the start i cant tell if it is buffering all or part of the video or simply downloading it all

as the end user i was pleased with the final outcome and it wasnt so much of a delay that i thought there was a problem with it...

I'm using an iPhone 3GS. I get the following error when I try to view the video:

"Cannot Open Page

The page you requested tried to open a URL with a scheme that your device cannot understand.

The called scheme was rtsp://."

Damn iPhones never do what you would think. It is just the url that Youtube provides so thats strange that it is not working on iphones. It should boot up your youtube app so maybe you dont have one installed. Could you advise.

Androids and others work fine.

Anyhow this video was pasted in another discussion but you should have a look at it and could be used for customers.

I'm thinking of printing out some sheets with the best tidbits from my e-book with a QR code at the bottom that links to my opt in page.

Any advice for how to speak to business owners or how to present my service?

I'm still in two minds about whether to offer hosting, seems like a good way to get residual hosting.
You might ask them questions (I know, this is after the event now) that feel out which people prefer. Many businesses are happy to advise a small start up, such as yourself, as they remember when they were young and feeling out the market.

Perhaps offer both options - website+1yr hosting for a flat fee, or website + monthly hosting (or updates, or whatever). See what people want to do, see what they advise you to do.

Marketing is an ongoing experiment, and this is definitely marketing.

Happy Trails!

If you are offering mobile website design and charging them hosting is a disservice to the business owner...there no reason a mobile website has to be on another host.

Sorry Quentin, got so caught up on your municipal page forgot to answer your original question - I have an 4g htc and the initial video came right up and began playing immediately - but... just before the last minute or so, it did delay - not for long though but when it continued the audio was a bit disrupted and the last of the video was pixelated.

@ Quentin, what QR code generator are you using to encode your QR's. All of the generators I have found don't give the action to my codes that your QR code has.

This is a very simple one QR Code Generator - create QR Codes online [business card, t-shirt, mug, 2D barcode, generate QR-Code] - goQR.me and then track with Google Analytics.

Scott,

Have you changed your opinion on charging for hosting since the thread first started? I can't see why your SHOULDN'T charge for hosting their mobile site... Just curious as to why you don't charge now...

I started doing this in Feb. Have through several transformation in my business model. I charge one fee for to design a mobile site..when I set up the site I put it on their current domain as subdomain...if the want a .mobi I will put it on there hosting they have with their current domain...IMO charging them for hosting you dont have to your taking advantage of owner just to get residual. I make most my money after the mobile sell...that's where I get legitimate residual.

Sorry about my spelling and grammar typing on my iPhone

I don't go after businesses anymore that require updates been not fun...I just focus selling a design for the purpose of upsells.

Scott, I guess I feel the same way you do about hosting and businesses with updates. So, now that your business model has transformed several times, what upsells do you offer after a mobile website design?

Just working on some header images and so I make the dimensions 350 x 100 pixels, with a res of 72.

I understand graphics have to load fast but just find the settings suggested make my images muddy and look unproffessional.

What are some alternatives, I mean can the dimensions increase to say 400/500 pixels in width?

Or increase the resolution?

I know if I want the info bad enough Ill wait for the site to load.

What kind of graphics do you use JPEG, GIF, PNG?
I use PNG and that seems to work for me, i use photoshop and than i save them for applications and devices (file>>> save for web & devices) and then you get a screen where you can tune the image and what i do is i tune it so that it is just between being muddy and good looking.

You have to play around it a bit, but you need Photoshop to do it like that...

Luke you don't have to degrade the logo image that much. I know everyone says that a mobile site has to be under 20 kb but hey my header images are all around 20 to 30 KB on their own and look and load ok.

None of my customers have ever complained about load time so it is just a matter of testing. Also if not to complicated try a gif but jpeg is better.

I would stick with jpeg and just increase the quality a bit more. I can do it for you if you want to send me the original image.

If you don't have photoshop try this online optimizer.

Luke, firstly, you shouldn't rely on how badly a visitor wants the info so that he may or may not wait many seconds for it to load. I am pretty sure that non-IM internet users are less patient than us.

I can say that I am an optimization freak and I am glad to be like that when it comes to mobile web design.

Personally, I limit my logo to 3 KB and optimize other images as well, as much as I can. My purpose is to offer the fastest browsing experience possible, as if the visitor was using an application installed on his phone. I see this very important, because I myself never wait a website to load more than a few seconds even if it is on the PC.

Does that(optimization) bring extra work? Sure it does, but at the end, I know that my design will load really fast, and will not consume much bandwidth of the biz owner and the visitor.

In my methodology about images, I prefer to blend the logo with its background using CSS, that way I can obtain really small logos in size which look nice on a mobile phone. Also, I prefer to use one size images (not more than 240px) which will not stretch or look ugly in different size of screens. I noticed that many mobile sites are following this practice(having their images stretched), but it is not a recommended one and I really don't see the reason for stretching the images. A 200 x 80 logo is more than enough for a mobile site.

By the way, I am still trying to get my first client but I found a few biz owners interested in a FREE mobile site. I offered that to improve my skills and add them to my portfolio. And who knows, they might refer some clients to me.

Have a nice day everybody!

3KB? what kind of logo's are you using, because if you have a average header of 3kb that will look like crap , i keep under the 10 KB and still have a fast loading site, maybe the networks are better here i don't know.

I would love to see one of your logo's that is 3KB and looks decent enough to sell to business owners.

For image resizing i use
Code:
http://www.webresizer.com/resizer/
which is good so far.
I never had any trouble getting images load fast even if they were like 40kb.
I don't think you cold really get an 3kb logo to look awesome as mine do within 10-20kb, but i would love to see it, maybe i'm wrong cause i tried several techniques but non worked for me in terms of quality.
I just love the feeling i have after i finish my designs having a great logo and good layout that improves the used experience that gives them the feel that you(as a business) really care about the quality of your mobile website.

Hi Dave,

As I mentioned I haven't sold any of my designs yet But to have an idea, here is a mobile site I am working on as a free offer to a local hotel. It is not published yet, I am working locally, so I can only show its screenshots at the moment.

Note that, if the business already has a logo then I use it modifying a bit. But, there will be no difference in terms of my optimization methodology even if they don't have a logo.

Here is how it looks like on mobile, the logo of that one is 2.90KB:

And here is how it looks like on desktop:

Still in progress...

Dave, what you downloaded is the screenshot of the mobile template, not the logo. Here is the math: If the whole screenshot is 12.7 KB, then the logo which is about 20% of the screen will be about 2-3 KB, right? And it is actually 2.90 KB.
