Hi Guys..

For best SE ranking... How Many Words Should An Article Contain?

- Will a 500 word blog article help me rank higher with google vs a 250 word article?

- Also is it better to write 100 250 word articles vs 50 500 word articles?

What's your take on this?

I have wondered the same thing.
I thought long articles would get picked up
more than short ones. On ezinearticles, I
noticed that most are very short. People seem
to only use that as a backlink tool. They could
care less if the content is long and valuable.
So, I have shortened my articles on EA.
But I do lengthen them for my own sites.
Not only does this provide good content for
my visitors, but unique from the EA article.
Now what the length does for SEO is
debatable. Aren't backlinks part of SEO in
a sense? Short articles on EA seem to get the
    backlinks that people want.

Good topic that I don't think I have seen here
since I've been posting and reading.

I've ranked just fine with articles around 250ish.

And I've looked at tons of top listings in many areas where the articles weren't huge either.

The composition of the article/page is far more important than the length. Never understood why many people get set on word counts.

Honestly, the word count isn't something I focus on at all when writing my own stuff.

But, if someone else thinks it's better, please chime in.

I've taken a different approach in the last year. 750 word articles minimum. Each article is like a Wikipedia entry - thorough. I write them myself though. They've been doing well. They seem to have staying power rather than the quick hit.

Here is a quote from EA:
Must be a minimum of 250 words and no more than 5,000 words. For us, an ideal article size is 400-750 words.

From my experience, I stick to bannor's concept. That seems to provide the best results. Articles between 250-350 words on EZA for me have gotten almost twice as many click-thru's than articles that have greater than 351 words.

However, if I'm posting to my own blogs or websites, I'll usually shoot for over 400, and I'll feel really good about 500 words. If you're targeting a particular keyword in an article, you'd be surprised how many other search terms you subconsciously figure in. So, the more you write, the greater the chance that search traffic will find you.

    Thanks guys..

Maybe its best to mix it up.. 250+ word articles for SE backlink building and directories.. 500+ word articles for your blog..? So for Google and pagerank its all about how many articles you have out there and not the length of your article as long as its unique and targeted to your niche..?

For ex, if you are writing a "coffee machine" article. How many times do you use the word "coffee machine" in your article, is 3% ok for ranking? How many longtail keywords do you use in your article?

250 words are just enough for an articles. As long as the articles does make sense , unique, and gives a quality idea/guide/tips/infos for us to learn and to be updated.

I would say it is pretty much determined by the purpose of a particular article. For the most part, those you write for article directories are more of the promotional type, so excessive loquacity may interfere with the effect the article produces.

On the other hand, when whiting for a blog, you would certainly want to create a well-argued and logically complete piece of writing, and it might be impossible to squeeze this in 250 words. Another consideration is that larger texts allow for more keywords to be meaningfully interwoven.

Therefore my view on this issue is that while creating articles you have to go by common sense rather than formalized things such as word count.

If you want to know if a 500 word article would outrank a 250 article, not considering any other factors, just the number of words, then yes it will, simply because 500 words are considered as more information and therefore more valuable than 250 words.

However, if this is the basis of your SEO efforts then this won't help you much.

If have seen empty pages (yes, nothing else than one single word content there) outrank 500 words text. At the end of the day the backlinks make the ranking.

There is no correct anser to this....as I have seen this question many times. Just write however much you need to say what you need to say. Sometimes it will be 200 words and sometimes 2k words. Write like you talking to a human and things will be fine. No sense in spinning your wheels trying to extend an article to a certain amount of words!

My best performing articles are 275-300 words. They get the highest click through and rank fine. Remember most people suck at reading and will only skim an article, if its to long you lose them!

The more content the better, however, too much content may
interfere with what you want your visitors to do.

And too little content may not help your rankings.

I prefer from 500-600 words per page myself,
