Ask your web hosting provider for raw log files. This will contain everything you need to know about your website: error messages, file sizes, bandwidth, visitor details, etc.

If that is not possible for some reason, then you could add any one of the countless different stat counters on the download page itself. But what I would recommend is that you remove the ability for people to download, and instead use an online file sharing or file storage website that pays you pennies for each download. That way you are getting paid for each download, even if it is only a little bit. It takes the load off your own servers, and allows many more people to download at the same time. Do an Internet search for "get paid to share files" or something similar and you will find ziddu.com and many others.

awstats is a really great script that everyone who wants statistics on their websites should use. It allows you to see trends, SEO results, as well as yearly statistics.

Every web marketer should be using a tool like this, IMHO. I can install it for you on your server, if you would like.

Awstats is a nice tool for website statistics and many hosting services offer it for free to their customers.

I would try Google Analytics to track you stats. It is really simple for anyone to use and you could easily setup separate goals to track your downloads. All you have to do is insert their code into your script for it to track you visitors.

The service is free for anyone to use, but if your site have over 1 million monthy pageviews you will need to have an active google adwords account.

The only issue with Google Analytics is that it doesn't go through your server's logs, which is what the OP wants (he wants to know how many times a file was downloaded). Awstats can tell you this.

I've also seen issues with Google Analytics not picking up certain hits, for instance if javascript is disabled on certain browsers.
