I've found search estimate tools to be notoriously unreliable - generally speaking your own stats/income figures are the only truly reliable indicator.

i think it's getting easier to get social-based sites ranking well on a temporary basis, but the big traffic volumes will still be going to the established authority sites.

In my experience paid links aren't worth the cost - might be different if you have a high return product and only need relatively few visitors to make it pay.

I regularly see new sites go straight in with a PR 2 or 3 so...
