SSH is faster if you are trying to fetch files from a URL instead of your local machine.
The wget suggestion is a command line tool which you would use in your SSH whereas Curl is used in php.

login in via ssh and use WGET
wget 'http://domain.com/file/?search&channel=24'
will suck whatever is at that url into the directory your in.
