I don't think pinging has anything to do with it. There should be something else to it. Regarding pinging, I generally bulid tier 2 links and ping them, instead of pinging tier 1 links.

Only ask pay bump if it has potential and you ran some traffic to it. The last thing I want to do is getting a pay bump and then realizing the offer is not converting.

I've experimented this on 5 of my sites. When you go over 1000, the difference is little. 800-900 is the sweet spot. That said, word count alone can't get you to top.
