I don't think pinging has anything to do with it. There should be something else to it. Regarding pinging, I generally bulid tier 2 links and ping them, instead of pinging tier 1 links.

Trademark bidding is too risky. Stay away from them even if your AM is okay with that. The advertisers has the final say so stay away if you do not want your leads to get scrubbed.

iphone users tend to spend more than android ones. But there are more android users than iphone. So, if its a free app, go for android. If you're going to charge for it, ios is the way to go.

I've experimented this on 5 of my sites. When you go over 1000, the difference is little. 800-900 is the sweet spot. That said, word count alone can't get you to top.
