Relevancy is not as big of a factor as most people think. I've done heavy heavy testing into this. Backlinks with the correct anchor text is the biggest factor.

just use "addon domain" feature to add the domain. You shouldn't have any issues. I dont use dreamhost but before i got a dedicated machine I had 7 full sites on a Hostgator shared hosting.

I just FTP the pdf into your domain folder and link to it using "domain.com/pdfreport.pdf"

and that works perfectly fine for me.
